One day while surfing through the realms
Of angels, demons and my soul
I found myself all overwhelmed
Heart pressed against a cold brick wall
I sat there hiding in a cloak
Waiting for storm and rain to pass
But it would not, and I awoke
To go outside and touch the grass
Out there I saw an ancient tree
Towering over grass and grove
If there is hope in misery
That tree is surely one to know
As I drew near, I saw the trunk
Covered in bricks, pieces of clay
The remnants of a house that sank
But life somehow still found a way
Who were the people who lived here?
What could have happened to their home?
So many times older than me
That tree, it surely must have known
Red bricks were stuck deep in the bark
It swallowed large chunks of the wall
There’s nothing else left of that house
And yet the tree grew strong and tall
I stood right there in gentle rain
Whispering all my blues and woes
If there is hope in hurt and pain
That tree, I felt, it surely knows
The house and people were all gone
Only the tree was there to stay
It told me, storm or rain may come
But life will surely find a way
The last of us might leave this world
If humans go too far astray
But even then, come heat or cold
Life will still surely find a way
New trees will grow where cities stand
Flowers will bloom against decay
Even if nothing goes as planned
Life will still surely find a way
I stood right there with broken heart
And yet somehow it felt okay
For now I knew, after I die
Life will still surely find a way
I’ve intended to write this poem since my first encounter with that magnificent tree a few years back. In the nearest time I might be traveling there again, which suddenly reminded me of my intention and the right words all suddenly fell into place.
I’m glad I can finally share them with the world.
Such a thought-provoking poem!
Beautiful
